Obituary

Sammy Lee Shepard was born on September 11, 1948, in Savannah, Georgia, to the late James and Geneva Shepard. He was the third of six children born to this union.

Affectionately known as "Boo Boo" by family and friends, Sammy spent his childhood in Jacksonville, Florida, alongside his five siblings. He attended Duval County Public Schools and graduated from New Stanton High School in 1967.

Following high school, Sammy attended Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1971. During his college years, he was a well-rounded student who embraced both academic and extracurricular pursuits. He was an active participant in the Photography Club and proudly became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Upon completing his college education, Sammy began a rewarding career as a counselor with Gateway Drug and Rehabilitation Center, where he dedicated many years to helping others. His desire to serve extended beyond his local community when he joined the United States Peace Corps. While serving in West Africa, Sammy worked closely with local villages to support agricultural development, healthcare initiatives, and educational programs. During his time abroad, he became fluent in French and developed a lifelong appreciation for collecting precious stones.

Sammy was a man of many interests and remarkable talents. He possessed a deep passion for history and family genealogy, spending countless hours researching and preserving his family's heritage. His fluency in French also allowed him to serve as an interpreter for a Jacksonville law firm.

Known for his sharp mind, quick wit, and remarkable intellect, Sammy had a special gift for making people laugh. His clever observations and perfectly timed responses could brighten any gathering. Family and friends admired not only his intelligence but also his ability to engage others with thoughtful conversation, humor, and genuine warmth.

Sammy was preceded in death by his parents, James and Geneva Shepard; his siblings, Martha Nichols, Sergeant Michael Shepard, and Willie James "Sap" Shepard; and his beloved aunt, Evon Brown.

Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Sammy Lee Shepard, our beloved brother, father, uncle, and friend. He leaves to cherish his memory his two sisters, Patricia Shepard and Margaret "Gail" Shepard; his son, Samuel Shepard; and his daughter, Giandra Shepard-Jenkins (Andre Jenkins). He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure the memories they shared with him.

Mr. Shepard, may be viewed on Friday, September 18, 2026, at Carthage Chapel from 4:00 p.m. Until 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 19, 2026, at New Life Community Church, 113 West 17th Street, Jacksonville, Florida 32206, and the interment will be in Gethsemane Memorial Garden.
